Men Hair Loss

Men Hair Loss

Hair loss is a problem that occurs both in Men and Women and has a major psychological impact as a consequence. Healthy hair is one of the most important elements of male and female beauty and this is why you no longer need to suffer. Hence a number of people with hair loss resort to expert help.

Causes of Hair loss in Men

The most common cause of hair loss in Men is Androgenetic Alopeacia also known as male pattern hair loss or baldness.

This is due to the male hormone DHT acting on the genetically susceptible scalp hair follicles that causes them to become smaller and eventually disappear.

This sensitivity to DHT is a characteristic of hair follicles that reside in the front, top and crown of the scalp -rather than the back and sides, producing a characteristic and easily identifiable pattern. This pattern is described by Norwood and this is widely used by hair restoration clinics.

It typically starts with recession of the hairline at the temples and thinning of the crown. It may progress to total baldness leaving a wreath of hair around the back and sides of the head.

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin that is produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of the skin. As follicles produce new hair cells, old cells are being pushed out through the surface of the skin at the rate of about six inches a year. The average adult head has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs and can lose 100 per day, finding a few stray hairs on your hairbrush is not necessarily a cause for alarm.

At any one given time, about 90% of hair on a person's scalp is growing. Each follicle has its own life cycle that can be influenced by age, disease and a wide variety of other factors. This life cycle is divided into 3 phases.

Anagen -active hair growth that lasts between two and 6 years.

Catagen -transitional hair growth that lasts two to three weeks.

Telogen -resting phase that lasts about two to three months , at the end of the resting phase the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it and the growing cycle starts again.
